There was also the annual dramatic encounter between Newcastle United and Liverpool as they played out a 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park, and in this week’s SVQ, we’ll look at Premier League fixtures to feature the most goals in the competition’s history.
Brighton produced the performance of the weekend, though, thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex Stadium. It wasn’t just the goals. Fabian Hürzeler’s men pressed high and got their rewards, and we’ll show just how high that was.

⚽️ STAT: Goals Galore Between Magpies and Reds, Again
There was never really any doubt, was there? Newcastle and Liverpool so often have exciting encounters, and this one was no different.
Those of us of a certain vintage will remember “Collymore closing in!” as Liverpool won an epic seven-goal thriller at Anfield in April 1996, with Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle dealt a severe blow in the title race as a result.
On the day both clubs produced a heartfelt and touching tribute to Keegan following his recent passing, a legend at St. James’ Park and Anfield, it was quite appropriate that there was a dramatic ending.
It was an impressive showing from Newcastle on Sunday, despite losing key players over the summer and carrying a few injuries heading into this game.
Goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock either side of Cody Gakpo’s long-range strike had the hosts 2-1 ahead deep into second-half stoppage time, only for Lewis Hall’s foul on Reds debutant Victor Muñoz handing Liverpool a late penalty. Dominik Szoboszlai slammed it emphatically into the top left corner to secure a 2-2 draw for the visitors.
Really, four goals almost seemed a bit tame for this fixture. Newcastle and Liverpool always seem to produce goals against one another. Both league clashes last season saw five goals scored (3-2 and 4-1 to Liverpool).
However, it is not quite the fixture to feature the most goals in Premier League history.
