⏱️ STAT - The Latest Goal in Recorded World Cup History
It was probably only a matter of time before the record for latest goal in World Cup history tumbled. In more recent years, there’s been additional time added on to games via more accurate timekeeping, not to mention more substitutes allowed, therefore theoretically meaning fresher players late on.
But Youri Tielemans’ penalty on Wednesday broke a record that had only changed hands twice since 1966.
Tielemans scored – emphatically, we should add – a dramatically late extra-time penalty as Belgium completed an improbable comeback from 2-0 down against Senegal. The African side led 2-0 as late at the 85th minute in normal time, but the Belgians took the game to extra-time (Tielemans had also netted their 89th-minute equaliser) and then stunned their opposition at the last.
